French Firm Technip Awarded $1bn Gas Contract in Mozambique

Technip Energies has been awarded a major Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation and Commissioning (EPCIC) contract for the Coral Norte Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) project offshore Mozambique.

The contract was awarded by Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), the entity responsible for developing the Area 4 offshore gas resources. Together with related agreements previously announced, the award is valued at more than €1 billion for Technip Energies and was recorded in the company’s second-quarter 2026 order intake under its Project Delivery segment.

The Coral Norte FLNG facility is expected to produce approximately 3.6 million tonnes of LNG annually. Combined with the existing Coral Sul FLNG unit, total production capacity at the Coral hub will reach about 7 million tonnes per annum, further strengthening Mozambique’s position as one of Africa’s leading LNG-producing nations.

The project comes as Mozambique continues to consolidate its status as a key player in Africa’s natural gas sector. Home to some of the continent’s largest offshore gas discoveries, the country is leveraging its vast reserves to attract international investment and expand its footprint in global LNG markets. The development of new export infrastructure is expected to play a critical role in supporting economic growth, boosting government revenues and strengthening energy security.

Mozambique is estimated to hold more than 100 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas, most of it located in the Rovuma Basin off the country’s northern coast. Since the successful launch of the Coral Sul FLNG project in 2022, investor confidence in the country’s gas sector has strengthened, despite security-related challenges that have affected parts of Cabo Delgado province. Major energy companies continue to advance projects aimed at unlocking the region’s significant gas potential and positioning Mozambique as a long-term LNG supplier to global markets.

Designed as an enhanced replica of the Coral Sul FLNG vessel, Coral Norte will benefit from lessons learned during the development and operation of Mozambique’s first offshore LNG project. The standardized approach takes advantage of identical feed gas characteristics and similar deepwater operating conditions, helping to reduce execution risks, improve efficiency and accelerate project delivery.

Commenting on the award, Technip Energies Chief Executive Officer Arnaud Pieton said the project demonstrates the confidence of Eni and its partners in the company’s FLNG expertise and the operational success of Coral Sul.

“By leveraging our ‘design one, build many’ approach, we are demonstrating how standardization can accelerate the delivery of large-scale offshore energy projects. This model supports the faster deployment of LNG capacity while contributing to global energy security and supply diversification,” Pieton said.

The Coral Norte project is being developed by Eni in partnership with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Mozambique’s national oil company ENH, XRG and Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS). Beyond LNG, Mozambique is also expanding investments in power generation, transmission infrastructure and renewable energy projects as it seeks to strengthen its role as a regional energy supplier.

The Coral Norte development marks another milestone in the monetisation of Mozambique’s vast offshore gas resources and is expected to reinforce the country’s growing importance in Africa’s energy landscape and the global LNG industry.
